more music!

16 February 2014

Most of my updates during each year are party-related, and therefore end up on Britta Blvd instead of here. You’ve seen my travel updates, but since the choir tour to Ireland in 2010, I haven’t had as much music to update the past few years…however this time I have more to say!

Margarita Friday caroling at Fiesta del Mar TooThe past several years we have sung a couple Christmas carols at Margarita Friday, complete with revised lyrics and enough song sheets to share, which has been fun enough that several other customers request to know the date in advance to be sure they won’t miss it! This past year, many of the Margarita Friday crew started going to a new restaurant, so Sheila B. & I made it a mission to gather a core group to lead a caroling caravan to both restaurants so everyone would have a chance to sing Deck the Bar, Feliz Navidad, and Have Yourself Crowd of Carolers at Roberto's CantinaAnother Margarita!

We didn’t take video for 2013, but here are some past videos of Fiesta Caroling:

Cibo Cantabmius including a new generationI’ve kept singing each Christmas with my college friends as Cibo Cantabimus for over twenty years at my parents’ annual party, now with a new generation of performers included!

Magnificat for the Chorale Service at Advent LutheranThe same weekend as my parents’ annual Christmas party was the chorale service at my home church, Advent Lutheran. The choir is very small these days, so I was asked to help out, including singing the Magnificat solo at the 8am service. That was a lot of singing in one weekend, especially when I was still getting over a bad cold!

Caroling around Louie & MJ's neighborhoodI was finally in better voice by the time Louie & Mary Jo hosted caroling around their neighborhood, with little Benjamin eagerly handing out candy canes to each house as we serenaded them, so that was a lot of fun too!

I also found out with less than 12 hours notice about the 20th annual San Jose Saxophone Christmas last December, so I played my baritone saxophone for 4 hours San Jose Saxmas 2013without having played in several years. (http://www.facebook.com/SJSaxmas for photos & videos). My bottom lip was hugely swollen the next day, but it was worth it to play such fun music with 200 saxophones! I even found my long-lost college friend Andy from the UC Davis Jazz Band also playing his baritone Long-lost college friend Andy & Britta with baritone saxophones!saxophone! I sure hope my schedule allows me to join again next December!

Yes, almost all of that was during the Christmas season, but I’ve also been singing with another group this past year. I’ve joined an Americana roots band called Black Sunday Roadshow, singing fun tight harmony backup vocals with two good friends and about 16 instruments like banjo, fiddle, horn section and guitars. I’m not in any official photos yet, but these shows are really fun, so hope you’ll be able to come hear us in 2014!

There are more fun photos of Cibo Cantabimus and San Jose Saxmas below if you’d like to keep reading…
