Travels Up the West Coast: July 1997
Day Two

Day Two: July 8th, 1997...Tuesday

I-5 North US 101 North

The beautiful Motel Hi-Lo

We just had to have a picture by this wonderful example of 1950's signage...This was where we had to stay Monday night...The place gives a discount if your car was towed by Bill's Towing! Lucky for us, and we needed the luck at that point...We were able to continue our trip with my mom's car, since she was kind enough to drive up herself, leave her car, and take a train back in the middle of the night!...

Us Leaving Weed

...and here we are leaving Weed...We only knew this sign existed because the tow truck took us into town this way, but I thought the bad pun was hilarious, so a picture was necessary to immortalize it..."Weed Like to Welcome you"...hee, hee!

Driving along US101

After we had cut across Oregon to US 101...

Lighthouse on 101 North

...we continued north along the coast, and saw some beautiful sights like this lighthouse on the point...

The Sea Lions

...and the sea lion caves...Well, we actually didn't see the caves, but those little specks are the sea lions...Too wet and windy for us to climb all the way down there...not when we were supposed to make it to Newport by dinner to see my relatives!...

Captain Cook Inn card

After eating dinner and socializing with my dad's brother and his family, we called and found out that the room we would have stayed in the night before was still available for us that night, so we told them we'd be there before they closed the office (and we just barely made it by the skin of our teeth through the horribly dense rain and unlit highway!)...We did make it!...

Happy Birthday Marcus

Since we'd be spending the next day driving and visiting my grandmother in Astoria, I knew we wouldn't make it to Seattle in time for me to make Marcus a birthday cake on his actual birthday, so since I figured it was already his birthday "back home" since they were eight hours ahead, I gave him my present and we shared a British Airways bottle of California champagne I'd saved from my last trip...
