Travels in the United Kingdom 1997
July
Arrival in Didcot
Marcus, Louie and me leaving my parents' house in Roseville...This was the day after Stephanie and Mel's wedding, and since Louie was around, he graciously offered to drive us all the way to San Francisco International Airport on his way back to Mountain View (near San Jose)...
Here's what is left of my horribly expensive airline ticket. It was cheaper for Marcus to buy his own ticket over there, and I got mine through my travel agent grandmother as usual, but the plan we had worked out to have us sitting together hadn't worked...but we not only got lucky and sat together, but we were in the front row which has much more leg room!
After we finally made the long trek from Heathrow to Didcot, Oxfordshire, I finally saw Marcus' house in person. This is a view of Marcus' back garden now in summer bloom. This is taken out the upper back window, since pictures taken from ground level don't show all the blooms well enough. For those of you who are wondering, the width of this garden is also the width of his house...twelve feet only...
...As we were driving through the thatched-roof village near Didcot, I told Marcus he had to stop so I could take a picture of this chicken for Tracia (see here for a picture of Tracia with a chicken on her head and you'll see why I had to stop!). I know she likes the black and white chickens the best, but I'd never seen any in person. At least this chicken posed nicely for me, unlike the sheep...but that's another story...
This probably works as a nice segue to the next section, since I bought this authentic beaver top hat with it's leather carrying case at an antique shop my first day in Oxford...On the inside of the hat, is says "made by exclusive appointment to HM the King", so it's at least 50 years old, and I suspect older myself...Not only is it in excellent condition, but it fits me perfectly!
