Nicknames of Brittas Worldwide

As you can imagine, having such a unique name as Britta is a very ripe field for nicknames and teasing, as well as just plain never having anyone get it right on the first try. I am not the only Britta who has discovered this, as you can see contributions from other Brittas below...

Me first! :-)

When I was five years old, the bus driver on the first day of school heard my name, started calling me "Burrito" to be "funny", and never ever stopped the whole year...! I'll have to say that, living in California, Burrito has been the most common butchering of my name, aside from just plain mispronunciation...that is, until the Brita Water Filter came out in 1989, my senior year in highschool...Now that has definitely become the bane of Brittas around the world...

So, here's my list, in roughly chronological order:

I must be forgetting some, since I always remembered the list as being longer...I'll add more as I remember them...

Please e-mail me with the nicknames you've been called as a fellow Britta, and I'll post them here for all of us to see...!

On to nicknames other Brittas have had...

Subject: It's another Britta

What a great site! I have met many many Britta's.I am 28. I lived in Florida, Georgia, and now seattle, WA....It's amazing how many I have run into. We always seem to say, "you don't look like a Britta" I guess it's hard to picture what someone with your name looks like, until you see them. It's strange. My name was taken from a book called the Drifters my mom was reading while pregnant with me. As for the water filter garbage...I just make that person buy me a beer if they say that( if I'm at the bar)and then tell them to not say that to the next Britta.... if not, they get a smirk. Here are some nicknames....
Britz
Britter ( my boyfriend is from boston, and can't say it right)
Bretty
Britta Boo
Brittles
Butter
Bratta
and the list goes on.
I look forward to checking out your site more....
Maybe we can have a big Britta get together...that would be pretty freakin' confusing!!!

hi there! I was thinking, let's be original, I mail you guys to say that I'm a Britta too. I discovered your site when I was looking for a website with my name in it. and, as I say, it exists! I have met 1 person in my life that is named Britta too, but she is only 4 years old (I'm 15 now) and it kinda surprised me, I kept asking "is your name really Britta?" not Brit or Brittany or something like that. she laughed at me and kept saying that it is her only name. I'm glad there are more girls with the same name as me!

Hi Britta! My name is Britta too! I am 9 years old and my parents gave me this funky name because they thought it would sound cool with our last name Stuhltrager.
I have yet to meet anyone in person named Britta. I also hate the fact that there is water filter by the same name. When I was a baby people used to call me the filter. My nicknames are Bee, or Brit. I think its cool that you set up this web site. Thanks!

Hi Britta,
my name is also Britta. Obviously. My parents weren't sure what my name was going to be. But they were supposed to go to a wedding the day I was born. The brides name was Britta. They really liked that name and they didn't think many other people had the name Britta. So that's how I got my name.

Some nick names are:
Brittanica (My personal fav)
Britta Lee (I like that one my parents call me that because of my middle name Lee)
Britt
Big Berta

Brheta (I don't know how to spell it)

and a whole lot more. But I'll stop there...

Nice Name,
I know exactly what you mean.... I hate the mispronounciations. And i hate the fact that i am blonde, so every time that i miss spell i word people make a blonde joke. It gets very annoying. Plus I hate introducing myself because I have to repeat my name over, and over... until they actually get it right. Then there is always the response, " like the water filter?". It gets old... I was just being bored and searching the web when i found your site. So it was a good surprise... Well...
I guess I should let you go on with your life now.
Please write back.

Hi Britta!

I was very surprised to see how many BRITTAs there are in the world. I thougt it is a typical european name.
I'm coming from Germany and my name is pronounced like the Waterfilter.
It is funny to see how it is pronounced in other countries.
My nicks are: Britt, Britt-Pop, Great Brittan, Brittchen, Berta.
I've met a lot of other Brittas and I also had one in my class for many years.
I really like my name (especially the meaning :-) ) but I often had the problem that english speaking persons could'nt pronounce it like I do.

Greetings to all BRITTAs of the World!!!!

Hi Britta!

I just came across your great homepage when I was trying to submit my own to Google. LOL Never thought that there are so much Brittas on this earth...
Well, what I have to admit is, that some nicknames really suck. I mean, Brit and Brita are not that bad (although the pronounciation is worse) but some of my fellow students used to call me "Brittitchen, ohne Arsch und Tittchen." In English it mean, Brittitchen, without an ass and titts. Horrible...

See you!
Britta

P.S.: You can surely publish my email and website address. I don't mind.

I hate those Brita water filter commercials, because whenever it is on the radio, people always give me a hard time, like "go drink a glass of yourself Britta!" (from the movie Superstar, because of Evian..) or "How exactly DO you soften water, Britta?" Subject: RE: Is it possible?

Here is a funny story to add:
The first time I saw the commercial for "Brita Water Filter" I was watching a college football game with some friends (all guys, the girls were out shopping). When somewhere during the first quarter, the "Brita Water Filter" commercial comes on. I had never seen it before nor had anyone else. It caught everyone's attention. I got elbowed with a "look your famous". This particular commercial was the one that explained the "Brita" in detail. How it does what it does so much better then the other filters on the market. Well it was the last line in the commercial that took well over a year of being teased and it was, "YOU may not remember how Brita works, but you'll always remember how Brita tastes!" The amount of laughter that last line brought to everyone in the room, with the finger pointing and the "Oh my god...HA!" I just wanted to curl up and hide. From that day I was often asked how I tasted. Nicknames that followed were, "Tasters choice, Filter (this I don't mind), Sweet Bri, Water Lips, etc". (I have to add that I wrote "Brita" a lengthy letter as to why they should pull that particular commercial. I haven't seen it since.)...

Sincerely,
Britta Urquhart - Florida

Hi Britta, I feel for every Britta who has ever introduced herself and then heard the line..."Like the water filter?" This is my only pet peeve...what's even more annoying is drunk college boys who think they are so clever for coming up with the line. Oh well...usually they remember my name though.

My nickname is Briha. I got it in highschool. My crosscountry coach use to cross the t's with 1 line, I ended up in the brochure as Briha...and it's kind of stuck....my parents still call me that, my friends from college call me that!

Good luck to you!

It looks like the last e-mail you have posted is about 9 months old, maybe you just get too many of these to handle? well, my name is pronounced "Brih-ta," and I always disliked it when it was pronounced "bree-tah" (even though it doesn't sound bad--it's just obnoxious to have your name mispronounced!!!) but what I really couldn't stand was "Breh-ta". The one I hated the very most (besides "burrito" and Brrrrrrittttta with a rolled "R") was "Burta" This is what dumb boys in high school used to call me to annoy me and it STILL annoys me at age 29! I do like "Pretty Britta" (grandparents and old boyfriend have called me that) 'cause it's sweet, and I don't mind "Peanut Brittle" even though it's dumb. I used to think "Britt Shit" was cool because I was a moron. My family and close friends call me "Britt".

Hi Britta,

I have always known there were more Britta's out there and now I have proof. As for me the nick names are the usual (my favorite being Bert.) I am 100% Swedish and proud of it. I was actually named after a swedish painter's, Carl Larson, daughter. So I was originally named Brita, but people pronounced it the way you pronounce it (Bree-tah) so my parents legally changed it to Britta (Brih-tah.) While on a trip to Sweden I passed a street with a sign that read, "Brittasvagen" (Britta's street in Swedish) I of course pulled over to get a picture. In sourthern California, Bilboa, there is a little cafe called Britta's cafe. Thanks for putting up your site.

I am a Britta from Germany. I discovered your website when I was searching for anyone in the U.S. who has the same fantastic name like me. I am so thankfull that my mother has chosen that name, she already told me that she once read the name and liked it imidiately. I know that is from swedish origin. Actually she wanted the name Britta Margitta for me, but my father prefered Britta Irmgard (Irmgard sounds like a disease of the stomach, doesn't it?) I also heard this thing with the water filters, but I didn't mind. My sister calls me always Britt or Brittchen, that's funny.

Well, I just wanted to say hello and tell you that I am happy with my name.

Hey Britta!

It is so great to see so many other Brittas out there. I have only met one other Britta ever in my life. And like all of you, my name is always butchered(everyone in MA where I'm from pronounces the "t's" as "d's"). And, most people honestly think my parents invented the Brita Water Filter (I wish!!). Since my famliy is Swedish and German, my parents thought it was a good idea to name me Britta, and I do like the name. I just wish people would get it right! My mom was into 'different' names so I was named Britta Emalies, and my three siblings names are just as unique. We never meet anyone with our names, but i don't mind.

So for some nicknames:
Brit
Brittle-Butt (thanks to my little sis, no idea why she gave me this one)
Britster
Senorita Britta
Britta Water Filter
Water filter
H2O
Brittachen
Brigitta
Bert
Brat
Burrito
Britter
Great site, glad to know its here!

Wow!! Other Brittas. I never thought I was alone but I didn't know there was a page. Good Idea. I have had quite the array of nicknames myself. I pronounce mine "Brih-ta" although I am Swedish (people would just have too hard of a time with "Breeh-ta"). The filter thing comes up everytime I meet new person being as I am in high school and people just aren't witty. At work, my name is Brietta. Apparently a year is not long enough for my employers to learn my name correctly. My boyfriend's grandma calls me Greta (she is from Germany). I've also had Red Barchetta My face turns really red when I'm embarrassed or running). And all the usuals as the rest have been called. Never Shitta though. I love my name though. It is so unique. A person will probably meet one Britta in a lifetime seeing how it is a dying name. I love it when people are intrigued with my name because I like explaining the background. BRITTA is such a great name! Thanks for making our name even more special by giving it a website.

Ok...for one my name, Britta, is a Norwegian name. As my older sisters grew older and had babies...they too couldnt pronounce my name that well. So they just called me "Duh" and between my friends and family members I was nicked named "Birdshit" "Birddogg" and "Filter". How exciting is that to be called "Birdshit" everyday in softball practice. Yeah, it was a hoot, but really annoying after awhile.

Hello again. I know that I just e-mailed you, but I have something else to say. I was named Brita after my great, great grandmother who was, you guessed it, Swedish. As you may have noticed I also spell my name with only 1 t. It is pronounced Bree-tah. I have been called filter and burrito. And worst of all everybody that I know calls me Brita pronounced Bree-dah. Whatever. Well, thanks for making such a great web page. I am 11. If there are any other 11 year old Britas out there please e-mail me.

Hello! This Britta (pronounced with a short "i") was born on October 5, 1971. I was named after my father's mother. My father is from Sweden. My maiden name was Svard, married name Bergacs (pronounced Burgas) so you can imagine the butchering I get every time someone tries to say my name! I do have to give credit to the water filter, because ever since that came out people have been doing better with my first name.

Some of the mispronunciations I have been subjected to have been:
Brighta
Greta
Brittany
Brigita
Bridgette
Brenda
Breeeeta

I have only had two nicknames:
Brit
Brid

And in 5th grade, I was made fun of with the name "peanut brittle." :-)

I have never met another "Britta" in person, although I just met someone this morning at the florist's who's grandmother's name was Brita.

I myself am making a personal web page & came across yours in a domain name search. I am so amazed at the ga-jillions of Brittas there are...
Nicknames:
Burrrr-ita - my favorite (my boyfriend came up with that for a feminine burrito, but now just coming back from Mexico I have second thoughts, finding out that it means a small female donkey)
Peanut Britta (grade school tease)
Brit
Britania
Miss Brit
and of coarse the famous pick-up line in a bar: What? Like the water filter?
However, I try to stay away from nicknames, for I feel that Britta is a nice, neat, and right to the point type of name.

Thanks for the website, I really enjoyed it...

Hi, Britta!

...After reading some e-mails from other Britta's I was amazed at how many we were! I realized that we have alot of the same stories to share.

My name is Britta Moriello, I am half Italian and half French Canadian. I am the only one around with this name and have been through much grief because of it! I used to hate it when I was younger but as I got older, I got to like it more and more.

I think Britta is a beautiful name, its unique and I think that one who has this name will agree that we are unique in our personality!

My mom says that she made up the name...

I too am so fed up about the water filter thing. I say to people now, hey I came before the filter OK !

Anyways, just wanted to say Hi to you and all the Britta's out there!

Feel free to respond.

Hi,

I'm Britta Fredegaard Nielsen-Orphanos. How' that for a mouthful. My friends call me "the Breeze" 'cause I'm like a cool breeze.
My parents are both from Denmark and all my life have never had to use my last name. Britta just seemed to be enough. Despite some confusion about the name when I was younger, it now seems more common and I wouldn't change it for anything. There may be other Brittas, but I don't think they match the rest of my name.

Cheers,

Hello Britta,

I really like to see that there's a web-site about Britta; because my name is ofcourse also Britta!
I am living in the south of the Netherlands and I never met a girl who's name is also Britta.
In my school period there where never people in my class with the same name. My mother read a book about a girl who's name was Britta and it was a very sweet and nice person. That's the reasonÊshe started to like that name and after permission of my father they gave me that name. And I am very happy with my name!
I thought it was a German name, but I was not sure. Now I read that it comes from Sweden.
My nicknames are Britney, Brinta(this is a serial like cornflakes), Britt (I hate this name).

For now, a lot of greetings, Britta (23)

Subject: Hey! Another Britta!

Hey Britta! (Oh my gosh, that was too freaky!) Obviously, my name is Britta too ...Like most Brittas, I too have experienced alot of teasing and "nicknames" because of my name. I was originally going to be an "Astrid", but my mother intervened, and I became "Britta". I don't think they're even sure why they named me that. Over the years my parents, sister, friends, and teachers, have have all added to my list of nicknames. Some are a nuisance, and others are just cool:

Breeta (I pronounce my name Brih-ta, so when people like my art or french teachers pronounce it this way, it gets on my nerves!)
Britt (This one's OK. When I'm online, or in chat rooms, I'm always "Britt" because it saves me explaining the whole pron-nounciation/filter thing)
Filter (I don't think ANY Britta can escape the filter thing...)
Ballistic Britta (Ever since eighth grade english class, this one's been popular, hence the e-mail adress)
Britt-Britt (Only one of my friends calls me this, but I guess it still counts)
Brittsy (My mother started this one...She always used to call my Brittsy, then some of my friend's started calling me by it. Now, it's kind of a screen name.)
Britt C Fish ( This came off of Brittsy - Britt C/BrittsyÊand my little "obsession" over fish.)
Britt Colleen Fish (A mutation of Britt C Fish, where my friend Liz substitutes the C for "Colleen". I kind fo like it actually, although my real middle name is Karin.)
Shitta (Thanks to this website (which my mother looked at, and read practically all of the "Britta's of the World Unite" entries, I now have this one... -_-)
Berda (Most people don't seem to get that Britta is spelled with Ts...Alot of people think that's what I'm saying when I introduce myself.)
Barta (Short-lived, but well used...Unfortunately.)
Clitta (Oh the horror....Boys are so immature sometimes...)

That was much longer than I expected! Hope i didn't waste your time! Bye!

My little cousin called me Bickie when he was a baby and my name was misspelled at a conference as Britia so my friends sang the "Brusha, brusha, brusha" song using "Britia" instead. I have had very few unique nicknames that stuck, however. I work for a small school system in South Georgia and have lots of contact with parents in my position... You should hear some of the mispronunciations of my name. I get these not only from the parents of the students with whom I work but I have gotten them throughout my life from my own teachers, peers, and even extended family members (you know - the ones you only see every five years at the family reunions). Greta, Giget, Brenda, Breta, Brittany (show us the belly), Brula (one of my favorites) - you guys know what I am talking about. If someone calls our office and stammers, "Can I speak to... um..." the secretary simply says, "Would you like to speak to Britta Mink? Let me get her for you." It is not that hard a name. I just don't understand. Oh, well. I love the site! Great idea!!

Hello. Like many others who wrote into your web site, I came across it too because my name is Britta(Bri-ta)soft i. I'm 23 and live in Texas, so many of the southern folks tend to not pronounce the "t" in my name...which makes it sound like Brida. Maybe it's the lazy drawl we southerners have...
My nicknames are the same as others have posted, but one guy I have chatted with from Norway told me that a negative nickname to Britta there is fitta...

Love,
Britta

Her mom sent in a fax saying that he had to say somethining to calm us down. She didn't think he would pronounce my name right ( brih-tah ) so she said it was like british but with an a, and he pronounced it briht-a ( with a long a ). My friends still haven't stopped calling me that.

Hi Britta--
I first wrote on 2/20/99. It's interesting to see how many more Brittas have visited your website since then. Thought I would add to the nickname thing. It's really just how people mess up saying my name pronounced, "Brit-ta."
I constantly get : Bridda, Bertha, Brenda, Brittany, Bridget, Bretta, Bratta, and have even had a few call me Rachel. Go figure. And, of course, the water-filter thing is commonly mentioned. By the way, my middle name is Michelle. Someone in one of your emails was curious about other middle names used with Britta.

Britta S.

...yes, everyone calls me brih-ta, too, but i tend not to notice it anymore. it's like a nickname, now.
Speaking of nicknames, did you ever get called "burrito?" My lord, it seems as though everyone i meet thinks themself to be very clever by "coming up" with this little nickname. It never bothered me, though, it's just stupid.
i like this site!,

...Just like everybody i was and still are teased with my name, like the other dutch britta from 7 April 2000, people always called me Brinta (from that Cerealbrand). As a child i always hated my name because i could not speak the 'r' right, i always called myself 'Bwitta'.
...Though i met some dogs (4) who also were called Britta. And it's not very nice when you've a dogs name. And did you know that in Portugal they call us Brita (Breeta) which is short for cabrita and that means gote...

Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2000 15:11:49 EDT

I used to get called Bertha and Berta quite a bit, but I have to say that the water filter has helped people to get my name right. Now they can at least say it (I am a Brih-ta, even though my mother is Swedish).

My mom's nickname for me was Britsy, or Britsy-Go-Go-Googily (I guess I made that one up as a child).

In high-school, very unfortunately, it was Clitta! Nice friends I had!

...The only thing is, I have a difficult last name, also. Koch, which is pronounced like Coke. Growing up, I said one of my criteria for a mate was a man with an easy last name! Well, then I got older (25+) and set in my ways, and I decided I wasn't going to change my last name if I got married. When I was 33, I did marry, and I did keep my name. I'd endured years and years of being "burrito and a coke," "7 UP the uncola," and "Britta Pepsi"; and now my whole name was very much a part of me and very important to me as it is. Besides, Britta Whitcomb, just didn't sound right!

Sayings/comebacks I've made up for my name...
"With a first name like that, who needs a last name?"
"Like the water filter, but with two ts."

Nicknames
Breets
Bree
Britta Baby
Burrito and a coke
Britta Pepsi
Baretta ( I was glad when that show went off the air!)
Brighta
Bweeda (by my friend's 3 year old son)
Brenda

"Misnomers"
Birgidda
Rita (lovely meter maid)
Frida
Bernita ( A girl in high school had this name, and I hated it when people called me by her name. She wasn't very nice or attractive.)
Brina

Hi Britta, If there's anything more bizarre than reading about others who share the name Britta, it can only be to learn than someone else endured the nickname Britsy-bratsy as a child. Others were Ritta-b, Brits, peanut Britta. My name was always pronounced Brih-ta, except by one friend who calls me Brrrreeeet-ahhh...

Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 18:59:53 -0700 (PDT)

...I've grown up pronouncing my name in english (Brihtah) so it's not as annoying to me. Sometimes I just use the water filter to explain what my name is. People always want to call me Brenda or Brittany. Hate both those names.
- Britta Kallunki
