VARIOUS SHIFTS AVAILABLE GENERAL PURPOSE: NOC's Network Administrators are expected to assist in the management of one of the largest independently owned IP networks in existence. This position requires competency in three technical spheres: wide area network administration, dial-up access layer administration, and entry-level systems administration. ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Infrastructure, Access, and Systems Monitoring - Monitor & diagnose the continental wide-area network on access-layer, network infrastructure, and core systems services levels - Perform network observation and routine administration on infrastructure devices, core computer systems, and dial-up access devices under the direction of management - Pro-actively address quality-of-service weaknesses by analyzing network and systems resource data and statistics Problem Direction and Solution - Diagnose and repair misconfigurations on infrastructure equipment (Cisco and Livingston routers, DSU/CSUs,, modems and modem racks, PortMasters, NACs, etc.) - Address problems in the three "functional spheres" of Network Operations: network infrastructure, the dial-up access layer, and systems services - Coordinate the replacement or repair of infrastructure equipment with dispatched field engineers - Use the Network Operations ticketing system to thoroughly document and track problem progress with clear language and presentation of evidence - Follow escalation procedures for tickets that cannot be closed within a specified amount of time or are of potential service impact MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum 1 year experience in telecommunications, network or UNIX system administration. Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field desired. The superior candidate will have qualifications in many of the following areas: Networking principles and technologies, in particular the application of the TCP/IP protocol suite in a production environment. Applied telecommunications experience on the dial-up network access layer. Understanding of core Unix system services and purposes. Prior experience in administration or shell/Perl scripting. Routing protocols such as RIP, OSPF, and BGP4. Familiarity with telecommunications, networking and systems hardware and how they fit into complex topologies. Any experience with production wide area network equipment, such as Cisco IOS, Livingston ComOS, Cat5 calbing, T1/T3 or 3Com Total Control Management software is a PLUS.
